The DfE SEND statistics (Jan 22) confirmed the following with speech, language, communication needs (SLCN) being the most common primary type of need, at 22% of SEN pupils. In total over 260,000 pupils in England have SLCN as their primary type of SEN, over 1.4 million pupils in England have a long term SLCN that they will not grow out of.
SLCN is both an umbrella term supporting co-occurring conditions or a primary need. This is now being highlighted more, both because of COVID and due to more investment in supporting SLCN conditions. An example being DLD (Developmental Language Delay) which effects 2 in every 30 children in the classroom (Speech and Language UK).
This course compliments all areas. It will give participants:
- theory behind how language develops
- how to support students in the classroom
- scaffolding techniques to support SLCN students
- practical strategies that they can takeaway to develop in their own settings
Aimed at classroom teachers (including ECTs), SENCOs and middle leaders.
