  3. New to Special

1.  Raising attainment – Creating a friendly SLCN classroom environment:

A 2-day course that will support you to raise attainment and create a classroom environment that will support  pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).  The programme will be delivered twice in different areas of the region, with 1 intersessional task being set between the two days.

The DfE SEND statistics (Jan 22) confirmed the following with speech, language, communication needs (SLCN) being the most common primary type of need, at 22% of SEN pupils. In total over 260,000 pupils in England have SLCN as their primary type of SEN, over 1.4 million pupils in England have a long term SLCN that they will not grow out of.

SLCN is both an umbrella term supporting co-occurring conditions or a primary need. This is now being highlighted more, both because of covid and due to more investment in supporting SLCN conditions. An example being DLD (Developmental Language Delay) which effects 2 in every 30 children in the classroom (Speech and Language UK).

This course compliments all areas. It will give participants:

  • theory behind how language develops
  • how to support students in the classroom
  • scaffolding techniques to support SLCN students
  • practical strategies that they can takeaway to develop in their own settings

Aimed at middle leaders, Sencos, Classroom teachers

2.  Understanding complex and challenging behaviour and what to do about it at a whole school, class and individual level

There is a mismatch between understanding the causal factors driving the rise in complexity and how to manage behaviour in the classroom and whole school level.

Relationships and empathy alone will not support staff dealing with the levels of challenging behaviour of a growing minority, whilst meeting the needs of the majority. There is a difference between an approach based purely on strengthening relationships and one that is relational. The latter very much emphasises the consistency , predictability and importance of boundaries and rules that makes staff and young people feel safe.

This course will address all those issues:

  • build knowledge
  • motivate staff
  • develop teaching techniques
  • embed practice

A blend of theory and practice following a framework of:

Theory –

  • Understanding the underlying societal and psychological reasons for the rise in challenging behaviour

Practical –

  • Having an attitude that is effective
  • What to say/what not to say
  • What to do – strategies that work for all

Equipping school leaders/teachers with tools/knowledge to manage behaviour whilst  understanding the causal factors driving it.

Aimed at School Leaders, Pastoral Staff and anyone managing complex and challenging behaviours in the classroom.
