Supporting reading in secondary schools
This term, the DfE are launching new CPD on secondary reading, developed by Professor Jessie Ricketts at Royal Holloway, University of London.
The one-hour online training package is for all secondary school staff and will enable them to support reading for all secondary students. The training includes a package for all secondary staff and a package for school leaders. Each package comprises of a set of videos with guidance and a workbook for reflecting and making notes. The CPD outlines theory and research findings, and practical strategies that can be implemented in any secondary classroom. The training can be completed individually or in groups.
The training was co-created for DfE by Professor Ricketts and teachers and school leaders with a range of knowledge and expertise in reading and secondary contexts.
The course will go live on the DfE YouTube channel on 28 April 2025 and will be featured on GOV.UK. Professor Ricketts will also host two launch webinars to introduce the training to secondary schools and highlight key elements:
